In front of a roaring Danie Craven Stadium crowd, the University of Cape Town (UCT) Ikey Tigers produced a championship performance for the ages, defeating Maties 44–21 in the 2025 FNB Varsity Cup Final. This win not only ended an 11-year trophy drought for UCT but also cemented their place among the elite in South African university rugby.
From the first whistle, UCT looked sharp, organized, and hungry. They surged early and took a commanding 19–11 halftime lead before tightening their grip on the match in the second half.
Maties, the most decorated team in Varsity Cup history, simply couldn’t keep up with the pace and precision of the Ikeys. Despite strong patches of play, the home side had no answer to UCT’s explosive attack and disciplined defense.
No player shone brighter than Ntokozo Makhaza, UCT’s dynamic fullback, who racked up a staggering 32 points. With two tries, a string of conversions, and key penalty kicks, he was the undeniable star of the final.
Makhaza’s heroics earned him:
“We came here with one goal, and this time, we finished the job,” said Makhaza after the match.
Maties, celebrating 150 years of Stellenbosch University, hoped for a fairy tale finish at home. Led by Captain Ezekiel Ngobeni, they pushed hard but couldn’t break UCT’s rhythm. Maties had moments of brilliance, especially through center Christiaan van Heerden Smith, but the Ikeys defense stood firm.
The sold-out crowd brought thunder to Stellenbosch. Red-clad Maties fans clashed in spirit with the blue-and-white wave of UCT supporters, creating a charged and unforgettable Varsity Cup atmosphere. The Ikeys’ celebrations after the final whistle lit up the night sky, a release of a decade’s worth of near-misses and heartbreaks.
UCT’s road to glory hasn’t been easy. After finishing runners-up in 2023 and 2024, many wondered if they’d ever go the distance. But this team, built on grit, speed, and unity, delivered when it mattered most.
“This win is for everyone who believed in us through the tough years,” said Captain Dyonase. “We made history tonight.”
